How our data works
We show what state regulators publish, with the date and a link. Nothing is scored, ranked by quality, or edited.
What we can and can’t show, by state
| State | Source | License, bond, insurance | Discipline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Florida | DBPR public records downloads | License status, type, dates and location. Bond amounts and workers’ comp are not in the files. | Cases with date, type and outcome, fiscal years 2021/22 to 2025/26. |
| California | CSLB master license list download | License, classifications, workers’ comp and contractor bond. | Not in downloadable records. We link to the official CSLB record for each license. |
| Other states | Not covered yet | We say so plainly and point to that state’s official license lookup. | |
How we handle records
- Match by license number first. By name only with a confidence check. If a name fits several licenses, we ask which one and never merge them.
- Every answer shows its source and “data as of” date.
- We never infer discipline. If nothing is in the files, we say “no discipline found in [state] records as of [date]”, not “clean” or “safe”.
- Records can lag. We refresh from the state files regularly; the official record is always the final word.
- History is kept. A license that drops off a state file stays in ours, marked as no longer listed. Florida respondents with discipline cases who are no longer on the current license file still appear.
- Imports are checked. If a file’s row count changes by more than 20%, we hold the update for review.
